Recovery Reassessment: What Happens When You Fly Home

The flight home is not the end of your surgical care. It is the start of a recovery window that often goes unsupported once you land.

The handover that often does not happen

You had your procedure overseas. Maybe in Türkiye, Thailand or South Korea. You came home with a discharge letter, a stack of post-op instructions and one email address for follow-up. The clinic that operated on you is now many time zones away.

Your GP looks after your general health. Your local hospital is there if something turns urgent. The weeks at home in between are the hard part. You are healing, unsure what is normal, and not sure who to ask. That is the window a structured recovery review can help with.

What a recovery review can involve

After overseas surgery, care begins with a real-time video or phone consultation. You meet a clinician and go through your discharge summary together. From there you set up a recovery plan that fits your situation here in Australia. A review may include:

If deemed medically appropriate, your clinician may recommend a monitoring plan, further review, referral to another doctor, or no treatment, depending on your circumstances.

Telehealth for recovery support

Most of this care happens by video and phone. That suits regular recovery check-ins. Reviews are scheduled at points planned with you. If a hands-on assessment is needed, your clinician will tell you and help you arrange a local in-person review.

Telehealth is not right for every recovery concern. Your clinician may recommend an in-person assessment, a GP review, a referral to another doctor, further investigation or no treatment. If you have severe pain, a high fever, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty or other signs of a serious problem, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.

Baseline Medical supplements your in-person surgical and medical care. It does not replace your surgeon, GP, or emergency services.

Healing rarely runs in a straight line. That is why we watch it. Recovery, supervised.

Recovery timeframes and outcomes vary based on your individual circumstances. Monitoring does not guarantee a particular outcome.
