What a compression garment is for
After some surgery, a clinician may recommend a compression garment. The aim is to apply a measured, even pressure over the area. To do that, the garment needs to fit the shape of the tissue. It also needs to hold a pressure within the range your clinician is aiming for.
A garment that is too loose or too tight may not do its job. Whether a garment is right for you, and what pressure to aim for, is a clinical decision made for your situation.
Why the fit can change
A garment is usually sized from a few measurements taken at one appointment. The size often comes from a manufacturer’s chart. Swelling can change a lot in the weeks after surgery. A garment that fits at the start may fit differently later.
When the fit changes, the pressure can change too. That is why one fitting, on its own, may not be enough.
How fitting and review can work
A more structured approach to fitting and review can involve:
- Several measurements taken at different points, so the garment reflects the real shape of the area
- Scheduled re-measurement through the early recovery weeks, when swelling tends to change most
- Checking the pressure the garment applies, rather than going by how it looks
Structured fitting and re-measurement is used in some clinical areas, including burns rehabilitation and lymphoedema management. It is less common in recovery after elective surgery. Whether any of this is appropriate for you depends on your procedure and your clinician’s assessment.
Baseline Medical can include garment review as part of a recovery monitoring plan, where a clinician considers it appropriate. Baseline Medical supplements your in-person surgical and medical care. It does not replace your surgeon, GP, or emergency services. We work alongside your treating team, with your consent. Individual results vary, and monitoring does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Care begins with a real-time video or phone consultation. Your clinician may then recommend a monitoring plan, further review, referral, or no treatment, depending on your circumstances. Telehealth does not suit every recovery concern. Your clinician may recommend in-person assessment where needed.
Garment fit is one part of a monitored recovery. Recovery, supervised.
